In contrast to the gastric band, the gastric balloon is not a surgical operation, but a therapeutic measure. The balloon, made of silicone, is introduced to the patient's stomach via the oesophagus, where it remains, filled with air, for six months. During this period the patient automatically eats smaller portions, due to the volume reduction, and is nevertheless quickly satisfied.
